Possible Causes Of Your Child's Swollen Lymph Nodes

If you have noticed that your child has swollen lymph nodes in their neck, then you may find yourself worrying about their health and well-being. And while swollen lymph nodes is a worrisome symptom, it is not definitively indicative of any specific condition. In fact, there are many different issues that can cause a child to have swollen lymph nodes. Get to know more about some of those conditions that could be the cause of your child's swollen lymph nodes, and then, you can be sure that you are prepared for the trip you take to your child's doctor.

An Ear Infection

One of the issues that may cause your child to have swollen lymph nodes is an ear infection. Ear infections are usually caused by bacteria that gets into the ear canal. These bacteria reproduce and cause pain and inflammation inside the ear. These infections can occur in different areas of the ear like the middle and inner ear.

While not all ear infections cause swollen lymph nodes, they are capable of doing so, especially if the infection is severe or has been going on for a prolonged period of time. Luckily, most ear infections are easily treatable with antibiotics and ear drops to help relieve pain and discomfort. Once the antibiotics for the ear infection are given a few days to take effect, the lymph nodes will likely become less swollen and uncomfortable.

A Common Cold

When most children get a cold, they experience a runny nose, congestion, a cough, and a sore throat, among other symptoms. However, some cases of the common cold have been known to cause swelling of the lymph nodes.

If your child has been struggling with a cold for a day or two and suddenly has swelling in the lymph nodes, the viral infection may be the cause. Unfortunately, the only treatment for the common cold is to ease the severity of symptoms. You cannot take antibiotics or other medications to "cure" the cold. But, knowing that your child has a cold can help relieve your worries as the swollen lymph nodes will resolve themselves when the cold leaves your child's system.

Lupus

One of the more severe potential causes of swollen lymph nodes is a condition known as lupus. Lupus in an inflammatory autoimmune disease that can cause severe complications including permanent organ damage. Some of the other symptoms of lupus to watch out for in your child are skin lesions, headaches, and body aches.

Lupus generally occurs in children 15 or older and adults, though. If you have a young child who has lupus, there are treatments available to manage the symptoms and maintain a healthy lifestyle. These include immunosuppressive drugs and corticosteroids.

Now that you have an idea of some of the potential causes of your child's swollen lymph nodes, you can be prepared for the possible issues your child's doctor will discuss with you when you take your child in to be checked out.
